frequently asked questions

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • Where do you do sessions with athletes in Thornton?

We do in-person sessions in our Centennial location, not far from Thornton, and we can also do Zoom sessions.

  • What ages of athletes do you work with?

We work with athletes of all ages in Thornton. We have services tailored for youth athletes who are in more devopmental stages of their lives; college athletes who have the added pressure of academics; and pro athletes of all ages who are dealing with the challenges of their sport as well as those of adult life.

  • What sports do you specialize in?

A few sports that we are well versed in at Speakstone are: Football, Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Swimming, Endurance Sports, Winter Sports, MMA, Jiu Jistu, Judo, Boxing/Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Karate, Wrestling, and more!

  • Do you take insurance?

Insurance has drawbacks that we feel limit our ability to provide top-of-the-line services for our clients:

    1. Privacy and Confidentiality: When insurance is involved, records of therapy must be reported to insurance companies, leading to a lack of privacy for clients who prefer to keep their mental health services confidential.

    2. Full Control Over Our Services: We have the freedom to tailor services specifically to the needs of the client without being constrained by insurance company policies regarding session length, frequency, or types of services provided.

    3. Avoidance of Pathologizing Clients: Insurance companies typically require a diagnosis for reimbursement. In sports therapy, the need to provide a diagnosis can be unnecessary or even counterproductive.

    4. Flexibility in Treatment Plans: Our therapists can work with clients to determine the most appropriate length and course of treatment without being limited by insurance restrictions.

We also do not take medicaid and unfortuntely cannot see mental health clients that have medicaid.

  • What are your qualifications?

Our team comprises dedicated Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors, each holding a Master's degree in counseling. With years of hands-on experience in the field, we bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our practice.

Beyond our formal qualifications, we are athletes too. Our dual perspective as counselors and life-long athletes enables us to not only apply evidence-based therapeutic techniques but also integrate practical insights from our own athletic experiences.

Our commitment to continuous professional development means we stay at the forefront of the latest advancements in sports psychology and therapy. We actively engage in ongoing training and research, ensuring our methods are cutting-edge, effective, and effcient.

  • Do you work with teams as well as individual athletes?

Yes, our practice is equipped to provide specialized support to both teams and individual athletes in Thornton, CO. Our approach is versatile and adaptive, recognizing that the dynamics of team sports differ from the individual athlete's experience.

For teams, we focus on enhancing group cohesion, communication, and collective mental resilience. We understand that a team's performance is not just the sum of individual efforts but also the product of synergy and unity. Our interventions are designed to optimize team culture, foster leadership, and ensure that every team member can thrive within the team environment.
